Roky Erickson RIP

Screenshot 2019-05-31 at 23.49.15We are sorry to hear of the death of Austin Texas psychedelic legend Roky Erickson. (Roger Kynard “Roky” Erickson (July 15, 1947 – May 31, 2019)

It would be true to say that Roky’s DNA is everywhere in every band that ever mattered. It’s going to take decades to measure his huge influence on sixties freak, punk rock, post punk, the Bunnymen, Television and all that gang and even Manchester and Britpop – its endless…

The innovative and brilliant frontman from the 13th Floor Elevators was a cult hero who life in the twilight zone was like a US version of Syd Barrett. Like Syd, he changed the narrative of music with his tripped out anthems after forming as a garage rock band in 1965 with his best known song, “You’re Gonna Miss Me,  before exploring the more far out edges of late sixties rock like the genius Slip Inside This House.

Hugely influential the band’s fingerprints are all over underground rock for decades, even after his 1968 onstage breakdown. Several comebacks over the years helped to enshrine his cult status and Roky is much loved by anyone who feels rock music intensely.

Farewell Roky…
