Fifteen shots and six corners weren’t enough for Celtic to get the job done.

Quote Message: That defensive structure wasn’t there for Celtic. I’m really disappointed for them because there are a lot of good, young, creative players in there who played very well at times tonight. They’re knocked out of another competition that they should be performing in.

  4. Anatomy of a crazy Champions League night

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

So, the story of the night:

Celtic fell behind to Ciprian Deac’s well-taken header after Callum McGregor was caught out by the Cluj man’s run.

James Forrest finished a cracking team goal to level, before Odsonne Edouard pounced on a defensive error to make it 2-1 Celtic.

Back came Cluj, Scott Brown penalised for hanball from a corner and Billel Omrani slotting from the spot.

Two minutes later, advantage Celtic again. Ryan Christie tapped home after fine work from Edouard.

It looked, at that point, that Celtic had delivered the knock-out blow, but Cluj could not be subdued.

Omrani stunned Parkhead with 10 minutes to play, and with Celtic piling forward, George Tucudean struck the killer punch with virtually the last kick of the game.

Crazy, enthralling, and utterly maddening if you’re a Celtic fan.

We’ll bring you Neil Lennon’s take on it shortly…

  5. Celtic hit in the pocket

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

Participation in the Champions League group stage is worth a heck of a lot of money, as former Celtic striker Chris Sutton acknowledges on Twitter.

  6. ‘Celtic got what they deserved – nothing’

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

    Tom English

    BBC Scotland’s chief sports writer

It’s a catastrophic performance, catastrophic result. Celtic defended really, really poorly, they were slack multiple times. This was the night when the defence caught them out.

Celtic got what they deserved, which is nothing. You concede four goals in your own stadium when you limit them to one away from home. It’s awful. I’m really shocked.

  7. How the action unfolded

    FT: Cetlic 3-4 Cluj

On a breathless night of European action, here’s a wee reminder of the scoring sequence:

    Deac, 27′

    Forrest, 51′

    Edouard, 61′

    Omrani, 74′ (pen)

    Christie, 76′

    Omrani, 80′

  8. Post update

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

The Fields of Athenry echoes around a forlorn and angry Celtic Park as the fans flood towards the exits.

This was a game Celtic were expected to win. Conceding four goals at home was not in the script.

The pocket of travelling Cluj supporters are going absolutely bananas, serenading their heroes.

  9. Post update

    Pat Bonner

Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

Quote Message: To lose four goals…you can play as well as you like offensively, but you cannot lose the type of goals Celtic lost in European competition tonight.

  10. FULL-TIME Celtic 3-4 Cluj (agg 4-5)

Celtic have been dumped out of the Champions League qualifiers for the second year running.

Incredibly, unfancied Cluj have rattled four away goals past Neil Lennon’s men for a 5-4 aggregate victory.

It’s the Europa League for Scotland’s champions, who will face either Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova or Sweden’s AIK in the play-off round.

A bitterly, bitterly disappointing evening for Celtic.

  11. goal

    GOAL Celtic 3-4 Cluj

    George Tucudean

    Cluj goal

That does it! Cluj strike Celtic on the break and George Tucudean drives a dagger into the hearts of the home side. Celtic are out of the Champions League. What a display from the Romanians.

  12. Post update

    Celtic 3-3 Cluj

Celtic, as they have to, are throwing everyone forward now.

James Forrest wins a corner, but Cluj deal with it and win a goal kick. That might be that…

  13. Post update

    Celtic 3-3 Cluj

We’re into the final two minutes at Celtic Park. The home side need a hero. They’ll have six minutes of stoppage time beyond the 90 to save their Champions League dream.

Callum McGregor tries a shot but it whizzes well wide of the target.

Can they create, and take, one last chance?

Meanwhile, on the touchline, Cluj boss Dan Petrescu is absolutely raging at the hefty time added on.

  14. Celtic go for broke

    Celtic 3-3 Cluj

Final change for Celtic, and it’s the little-seen, injury-plagued forward Vakoun Issouf Bayo who comes on for Scott Brown.

Edouard, Griffiths and Bayo all on now. Celtic must score, or they’re out of the Champions League.

  15. Griffiths makes an immediate impact, hassling the defence and winning a free-kick out of nothing on the left.

From the set-piece, Scott Brown heads through to the find the striker darting towards goal, but he hasn’t got the space to catch and finish after nodding beyond Arlauskis.

  16. Lennon sends for Griffiths

    Celtic 3-3 Cluj

We’ve been here before. Celtic need a goal. Neil Lennon gives Leigh Griffiths the nod. Off comes Olivier Ntcham. Can Griffiths be the hero again?

Cluj’s hero, two-goal Billel Omrani, is being withdrawn for the more defensive Andrei Muresan.

Six minutes left. What does this mental game have in store for us next?

  17. ‘Sleeping’ Celtic pay the price

    Celtic 3-3 Cluj

    Pat Bonner

Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

Quote Message: Celtic’s defence went to sleep when you have to react positively.

  18. goal

    GOAL Celtic 3-3 Cluj

    Billel Omrani

    Cluj goal

Wow. Bedlam. Cluj hit Celtic with another grievous blow.

Scott Bain denies Alexandru Paun’s shot, but he can’t get the ball to safety. The Celtic defenders are nowhere to be seen, but Billel Omrani is right on hand to smash the ball into the net.

Once again, Celtic are heading out. Once again, they need another goal. This is a crazy night under the Parkhead floodlights, but it’s threatening to end in darkness for the home side.

  19. Post update

    Celtic 3-2 Cluj

    Pat Bonner

Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

Quote Message: An incredible night of European football at Celtic Park. But still a huge 15 minutes for Celtic. The intention for Cluj will be to get the ball into the wide areas and then get it in the box.

  20. goal

    GOAL Celtic 3-2 Cluj

    Ryan Christie

    Celtic goal

This is bonkers! A topsy-turvy belter of a European tie.

Odsonne Edouard is instrumental again, sneaking his way in behind the Cluj defence and cutting back for Ryan Christie to flick into the empty net. That’s eight goals for the season for Christie.

Cluj’s lead lasted just three minutes and there are still 13 to go. Another for the Romanians would still put them into the play-off…
