Peter Crouch has responded to former Stoke City team-mate Glen Johnson’s brutal character assassination of Saido Berahino – telling talkSPORT: ‘Glen wasn’t wrong, but it wasn’t just Saido’.

Johnson made headlines for his recent claims on talkSPORT, slamming Berahino’s attitude and warning interested clubs off signing him.

The former right-back branded the 26-year-old one of the worst professionals he EVER encountered in football and gave numerous examples of his poor conduct during his stint with the Potters, before his contract was terminated earlier this summer.

And while Crouch said he couldn’t disagree with what Johnson said, he insisted Berahino ‘isn’t a bad lad’ and that he wasn’t the only bad egg in the Stoke team that was relegated from the Premier League in the 2017/18 season.

Speaking to Jim White on Thursday morning, Crouchy said: “I was in the same dressing room as Glen and Saido and it’s a difficult one.

“I can’t sit here and say Glen was wrong with what he said, but it wasn’t just Saido.

“There were too many players in that dressing room who didn’t pull their weight and, in my opinion, didn’t try hard enough and didn’t have the right attitude.

“There are only two reasons why a team gets relegated, and that’s attitude of the players and a lack of quality, and we didn’t have a lack of quality, put it that way.

‘mockery’

Liverpool vs Spurs final made a ‘mockery’ of Champions League name, says McCoist

“It was a shame because we went from the Stoke City I knew and joined, a group of hard-working players pulling together in the right direction and who finished ninth in the Premier League three seasons on the trot, to relegation.

“Every year we signed characters who weren’t fitting of a Premier League team and we got rid of good characters, and it resulted in relegation.

“It’s sad because it’s a top club, the owners are fantastic and the fans are amazing. I spent seven years there and I’ve got a big, big affection for the club and it was sad the way things happened.

“They’ve got a good manager in charge now and I’m still in touch with some of the players and I hope they pull it back around.

“But it wasn’t just Saido, there were other players as well.

“I’m not going to get into Saido’s background, I can only take people as I find them, and he didn’t pull his weight in that last season really, as a number of others didn’t.

“But I don’t think he’s a bad lad, not at all. I wish Saido well and I hope he continues.”
